On 27 April 2016, Peter Bitsch, the Vice-President of the Hessian Chamber of Architects and Town Planners, opened the 1st Hessian Fire Safety Day in Frankfurt am Main. The event provided first-hand information regarding innovations in the planning of fire safety focusing on technical and building law aspects.
From current developments in building regulations in Hesse and risk assessments of different construction methods through to examples of best practice in contemporary architecture, the first Hessian Fire Safety Day was organised very much in the spirit of an interchange between experts from a range of disciplines:
- What has changed with regard to the law, regulations, guidelines and standards relating to preventive fire safety?
- What is required from intelligent fire safety concepts?
- What challenges will fire safety planners face in the future?
- What is needed for first-class and innovative architecture to succeed, taking into account building law and fire safety aspects?
The participants of the Fire Safety Day, of which there were around 200, benefited from the expert knowledge of representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry in Hesse, professional associations, planning offices and the fire service, and from the field of construction supervision, and could also expand their own network with expert contacts from the departments, building authorities and fire services responsible. The event was moderated by Professor Ulrich Dietmann, Managing Director of KREBS+KIEFER in Darmstadt, which was also substantially involved in organising the programme for the Fire Safety Day.
In his own talk on the topic of "Fire safety in refugee accommodation", he presented solutions, one example being the use of modular reinforced concrete construction.
Due to the high level of demand from the participants, a second Hessian Fire Safety Day will take place on 30 June 2016.
