On 26 February 2016, the international research centre, the "Center of Brain, Behavior and Metabolism" (CBBM) was officially opened in Lübeck.
Three institutes – neuroradiology, neuroendocrinology and pharmacology – are housed in the new building and the research carried out there forms an important part of the activities of the foundation university in Lübeck.
The transparent building has five levels, 5,400 m² of main usable area and can accommodate 320 scientists and students.
The communications centre is formed by two light-flooded atria that enable the interdisciplinary exchange of information between the researchers via connecting walkways, bridges, staircases and room-high glazed laboratories.
In the future, research groups in the building will concentrate on researching issues dealing with the brain, metabolism and eating behaviour, in order to investigate for example the relationship between sleep and nutrition, as well as nutrition-based disorders.
The structural engineering carried out by KERBS+KIEFER incorporated phases 2–6 in accordance with HOAI (German Fee Regulations for Architects and Engineers).
The supporting structure remains largely visible and, due to the ample use of exposed concrete and glass surfaces, is incorporated into the architectural design of the building.
