On 23 November 2018 the key for the Heinz-Schönfeld lecture hall as part of the Barkhausen-Bau ensemble of the TU Dresden was ceremoniously handed over by Mr. Engelsberger, Saxon State Ministry of Finance, to Prof. Dr. Hans Müller-Steinhagen, Rector of the TU Dresden.

For the first time since its construction in the 1960s, the listed auditorium has been comprehensively renovated and brought up to the latest state of the art with regard to its special acoustic and energetic properties. The Heinz-Schönfeld-Auditorium, one of the largest lecture halls of the TU Dresden and now barrier-free, offers 481 seats for lectures, conferences and congresses.

In addition to the fire protection improvements, the conversions and installations for the current requirements of user comfort and the technical building equipment, a complete replacement of the roof had to be carried out due to severe damage to the concrete roof slab on steel truss girders while maintaining the underlying auditorium ceiling (acoustic ceiling).

KREBS+KIEFER provided not only structural design but also extensive building physics services such as room acoustics, soundproofing and thermal insulation. The special room acoustics of the lecture hall had received national attention from the experts from the very beginning what was particularly emphasised during the ceremonial handover.
