The cross-border extension of the Basel streetcar line #8 that reaches the city centre of Weil am Rhine has enjoyed lively popularity ever since the end of 2014.
The formal inauguration of the "Dreizack" took place on 30 June, 2018 and it signified the direct connection between the streetcar stop and the trains of the Deutsche Bahn; with it the last piece of the official streetcar route extension was put into operation. After almost 18 months of construction it realized the actual purpose of the streetcar route extension, creating an efficient link for commuters in their public transport network. The construction of the “Dreizack” or Trident, has made the barrier-free access to the trains possible again after a long time of no access. It got its name from the bridges’ design with a central feeder from the route stop on the arched bridge, distributed via a path to the stairway exits on to the railway platforms, and the layout of the passenger lifts on platforms 1, 2 and 3.
The 7.5 million-Euro project was financed by the City of Weil am Rhine and the City of Basel, but mainly by the Swiss Federation and the State of Baden-Württemberg. The Swiss side carried half of the costs for the Dreizack. The Basel Cantonal Councillor Hans-Peter Wessels therefore was present to extend his welcome and gratitude at the opening ceremony to all participating in the project. The Senior mayor of Weil am Rhine, Wolfgang Dietz and Regional Head of DB Station&Service, Michael Groh paid tribute at the opening to all the special efforts of Mayor Rudolf Koger, who was the project manager of the Dreizack project.
KREBS+KIEFER was in control of the construction project, which is now complete, from level 3 on; design preparations for several action areas in accordance with AHO booklet No. 9, the local construction supervisory responsibilities, the overall construction management, the local supervisory function for cable installation and civil engineering as well as any registrations of railway operation.
Senior mayor Wolfang Dietz took advantage of the opportunity to promote the extension of the streetcar route #8+, the continuation of the streetcar route to the Läublinpark station. KREBS+KIEFER would be happy to support the City of Weil am Rhine in this project as well.
