A ground-breaking ceremony on 13th December 2010 marked the official start of construction of a new cafeteria and a three-area sports hall for the IGS Bretzenheim in Mainz.
Prominent representatives of the areas of education and politics were invited to this “happy day”, as Jens Beutel, the mayor of Mainz, called the occasion in his opening speech.
The sports hall measures 45 by 27 meters and will be constructed using pre-cast pre-stressed beams and fixed-end pre-cast reinforced concrete columns. Together with its ancillary rooms and grandstand, the sports hall is expected to be completed in summer 2012 at the same time as the cafeteria. The mayor gave a figure of 6,8 million Euros as the total cost of the building project.
Part of the cost will be borne by the federal state of Rheinland-Pfalz, as emphasized by the state’s Minister for Education, Doris Ahnen. Some months ago, the school was selected as an elite school for football (soccer), so that sport is particularly important here.
The head of the construction authority in Mainz, Marianne Grosse, also expressed her delight at this big step forward. Now that the all-day school concept has been approved, lunch for the schoolchildren will be provided in the new cafeteria in a two-shift system.
KREBS+KIEFER Mainz carried out the structural design check for the project and supervised the construction process.
Dipl.-Ing. Heinz Steiger was the checking engineer responsible for this project.
