Monorail for Luxemburg – K+K presents the result of the study of alternatives

Due to the increasing numbers of workplaces in the city of Luxemburg which have led to increasing numbers of commuters from France, the access routes towards the city – all main and secondary roads – have reached the limits of their capacity. This causes kilometer-long traffic jams every morning and evening and excessive traveling times to and from the workplaces.

KREBS+KIEFER Beratende Ingenieure was asked to develop alternative solutions for improvement of local passenger transport. To do this, we divided local public transport into three groups:

  • bus systems
  • rail-based systems
  • elevated systems.

Due to the lack of capacity and the major disruption to railway operations, bus systems could be discounted at an early stage.

The rail-based and elevated transport systems were then analyzed, assessed and compared on the basis of the following criteria:

  • construction time and disruption to third parties
  • traveling time
  • noise
  • vibration
  • environment
  • attractiveness
  • costs

Route planning for both systems kept as close as possible to the motorway; it was planned that the foundations of the elevated system would be positioned on the central reservation of the motorway.

The comparative assessment carried out in the study showed that the elevated system, here a monorail, has clear advantages over the railway.

The advantages:

  • less space required
  • shorter production time
  • lower production costs
  • less disruption to third parties (with a city railway, each road and each motorway junction crossed by the railway would have to be altered).

The monorail is the most suitable transport system – safe, reliable, efficient, economical and attractive.

With support from the German RailGroup partners, a decision-making study was produced by K+K on behalf of the German RailGroup and presented at a press conference held by the broadcaster RTL Luxemburg on 25 th September 2013. The project was presented to the public on the same day during the evening program.
