New Construction of BAB A1 viaduct in Volmarstein
A structural inspection in Volmarstein in 2011determined that the viaduct was damaged and needed to be rebuilt. This decision was based in no small part on the rapid traffic increase on the A1 in the direction of Bremen and Cologne. The costs of the construction project are estimated at a total of about 25 million euros.

Ludger Loers, authorized signatory at KREBS+KIEFER, emphasizes that all participants in the construction project are working towards the same aim, to set as few restrictions as possible and to be able to meet the interests of road users.
By designing the bridge in two sections, one part can continue to function while the other part is being demolished and then reconstructed. The changeover to the newly built bridge half is projected to take place between the end of 2019 and the beginning of 2020. During that time, the completion of the other bridge half is then expected by the end of 2020. The new structure is 7 meters wider, so that three lanes plus an emergency lane can be provided in each direction. The emergency lanes of the old bridge have temporarily been converted to active traffic lanes because of high traffic demands.
