The new biomedical research center building cost around 102 million EUR and was financed by Hesse’s university construction program HEUREKA. It will strengthen life sciences teaching and research at Gießen University.
The amoeba-shaped outline with its five finger-like wings has a gross floor area of ca. 27.700 m² accommodating laboratories, offices, seminar rooms and lecture theaters belonging to eight institutes from four departments (medicine, veterinary medicine, biology and chemistry as well as agricultural science, nutrition and environment management). Their areas of work include heart and lung research as well as research into influenza viruses such as the pathogens that cause bird flu and swine flu.
The biomedical research center was designed by Berlin architects Behles & Jochimsen. The structural design was carried out by Reichmann + Partner from Ehringshausen. The services provided by KREBS+KIEFER included checking the structural design and construction supervision. The checking engineer was Mr. Dieter Hanek.
