On 1 December 2015, after a planning and construction period spanning almost four years, the new building of the BBS II was opened in a ceremony attended by the mayor, Dr Klaus Weichel, the Secretary of State at the Ministry of Education, Hans Beckmann, and Principal Fritz Pfaff.
With the completion of the new building, the full complement of 2,600 students and 150 lecturers have had 34 new classrooms, a media room, a sick room and a multi-purpose room at their disposal since the start of the 2015/2016 academic year.
About 30 companies were involved in the construction of the new building and the construction costs were approximately EUR 12 million. The construction of the new building was subsidised by the Federal State in the amount of around EUR 6.7 million.
With the opening of the new building, the first of the four construction phases has been concluded. The second construction phase, to follow soon, will be the renovation of that part of the building in Martin-Luther-Strasse that is under a preservation order. Also to follow are the renovation of that part of the building in Schanzstrasse (3rd construction phase) and the demolition of the annexe in Siegfriedstrasse (4th construction phase).
Providing accompanying entertainment at the event were the institution’s quartet, the college band and the drama group from Berufsbildende Schule.
As part of a Europe-wide tender procedure, KREBS+KIEFER Ingenieure GmbH in Mainz was commissioned at the start of 2011 to provide the structural engineering services for the entire renovation.
