On 7 June 2015, the World Conference Center in Bonn was officially opened as part of a UN climate conference. The guests of honour included the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon and the Federal Minister for Foreign Affairs, Frank-Walter Steinmeier. After an eventful construction history, the new main building of the WCCB can now be put into use.
After the start of construction in 2006, building work was stopped in 2009 shortly before completion due to the bankruptcy of the then investor. After several years of legal wrangling and with no activity on the construction site, the project has now been completed with the city of Bonn as the promoter.
The building is located in the former government quarter in Bonn, in the immediate vicinity of the old Bundestag building. It offers space for events with up to 5,000 people, as an extension of the existing congress centre on the UN campus.
KREBS+KIEFER was involved as long ago as the initial project phase, in which it was responsible for the structural design for the building, including the construction pit. We are especially pleased that we were also able carry out the status analysis and adaptations to the building shell for the city of Bonn when the work was completed after the long lay-off.
