“The museum has to grow, so that the past has a future”. With this mission statement of the friends of Staatliches Museum Schwerin e. V., the topping-out ceremony for the museum extension officially began on 27 August 2015.
Mr Hufen, Managing Director of the Department for Construction and Properties in the Federal State of Mecklenburg-West Pomerania, thanked all the planners and construction workers for their dedicated collaboration. All the companies involved were mentioned by name, including KREBS+KIEFER. For this construction project, KREBS+KIEFER was responsible for the structural engineering, the building physics and the preparation of the fire safety concept. The extension is expected to be opened at the end of 2015 and will display exhibits by the object artist Günther Uecker.
The existing listed building and the new construction will be connected by a glazed connecting walkway. As a building with a modern design, the extension is seen as a successful architectural addition to the existing historic building.
