THE SQUAIRE complex developed by IVG at Frankfurt Airport enjoyed outstanding success at this year’s MIPIM in Cannes and won the “Oscar of the real estate business” in the category „Best Office & Business Development“. This prize is awarded annually in nine categories to enterprises which have developed and completed the most exceptional projects on the international scene.
In its category, THE SQUAIRE prevailed against strong competition from Manchester (1 Angel Square), Fornebu in Norway (Statoil offices) and Mailand (Unicredit Tower).
The building, which stands on the roof platform over the long-distance railway station at Frankfurt Airport, was designed by JSK Architekten Frankfurt. It was opened in 2011 and offers 140.000 m² of commercial space which is used by hotels, offices and practices as well as for hospitality and retail purposes. It was awarded an LEED gold certificate in 2012.
The structural design for the superstructure was produced by KREBS+KIEFER Darmstadt in a consortium with the bwp and S.A.N consultancies. KREBS+KIEFER was responsible for overall stiffening (including the sections of the complex that project far beyond the front and back of the building below) and for the existing structure which had been built ten years earlier and was not designed for these additional loads. By optimizing the reserves in the system and the cross-sections, but also by designing ingenious strengthening measures, it was possible to overcome these deficits and successfully construct this nine-floor superstructure on top of the existing building.
