Following completion in recent months of the building shell for the first construction phase of Vocational School II for business and social studies and the start of fitting out work, the staff of Kaiserslautern’s facility management department, the school management and the planners involved in the project had good reason to celebrate, two and a half years after the demolition of the Benzinoring building.
With various speeches from those involved in the construction – including one from the head of the building department Peter Kiefer - and the traditional topping-out speech, the ceremony took place on 9th October 2013. Afterwards, head of facility management Udo Holzmann invited the participants to a hearty breakfast.
The Benzinoring extension is expected to be completed in 2014 so that it can go into operation in time for the 2014/2015 school year.
The building complex was originally constructed in the 50s and consists of four building components.
The overall modernization of the complex is divided into four construction phases and as well as the new extension, it includes alterations to two buildings which are protected as historic buildings and the demolition of a further building component.
Planning for the second construction phase is expected to start next year, and for the third in the following year. The demolition of a building in the fourth construction phase is the last measure in the project.
Total costs of 23 million Euros have been estimated for the overall modernization of Vocational School II.
This project, which was won in 2010 in a Europe-wide negotiated procedure, is being processed by KREBS+KIEFER Ingenieure, Mainz.
