Topping-out ceremony for the Peek & Cloppenburg flagship store in Vienna
A topping-out ceremony on 10th November 2010 marked the official completion of construction of the shell of a new flagship store in Vienna for the Düsseldorf-based textile group Peek & Cloppenburg.
The new department store with a sales area of around 12.000 m² is currently being constructed on Kärntner Straße, not far from the Stephansdom. The design, by the well-known firm David Chipperfield Architects, is characterized by its simplicity and severity, with a façade of Danube limestone reflecting local tradition.

In his speech, Karl-Heinz Strauss, Chairman of the Board of the general contractor Porr AG, underlined the outstanding performance of all those involved in the project in completing the demolition of the former Finance Ministry and the construction of the new building shell on schedule, despite the tight deadlines and confined space in Vienna’s densely built 1st district.
In this project, as in the cases of the P&C flagship stores in Cologne, Mannheim and Wuppertal, KREBS+KIEFER was responsible for advising the owner on conceptual issues concerning the structural design, for inspection of the structural calculations and for local construction supervision for the building shell and the natural stone façade.
