New national stadium Bucharest, Romania
The 55,000-seater national stadium on the site of the former Lia Manoliu Stadium in Bucharest is the venue for international football matches. The stadium is spanned by an elliptical spoke wheel roof consisting of an outer compression ring and an inner tension ring with 40 cable pairs. One of the major structural engineering challenges was seismic safety, as the project is located in an area with a high risk of earthquakes (Richter scale 7.2).
