In December 2010, in snow and icy temperatures, the arch of the bridge over the River Elbe was moved from its pre-assembly site on the left of the Elbe to its final position and floated into place. The column-free steel arch construction that spans the Elbe is ca. 140 m long and weighs ca. 1.800 tons.
The project involved complex technical challenges such as the construction of the arch abutments using self-compacting concrete, the positioning of the spherical stainless steel bridge bearings under the ends of the arch and the V-columns in the area subject to flooding as well as the assembly technology used for the superstructure. However, the greatest challenge was represented by the repeated interruptions to the construction procedure caused by external influences.
As the leading member of a consortium with ICL, KREBS+KIEFER is responsible for construction supervision services including supplementary claims management for the new bridge structure and its traffic connections.
